Summer Institute

Thank you so much for inquiring about the Tar River Writing Project! The TRWP Summer Institute is open to all teachers, K-College, across all disciplines.

The TRWP strives to help teachers become even better teachers of writing. Our primary method for accomplishing that work is the Summer Institute (SI), an invitation-only, three-week workshop for experienced teachers. In the SI, teacher-participants share their knowledge with each other and sharpen their own teaching through inquiry, reading, and writing, as well as through preparing a teaching inquiry project that allows teachers to explore a new teaching strategy or technology related to writing.

Summer 2013 Dates

July 8 until July 26
Monday to Friday
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Participants receive 3 graduate credit hours and a certificate which they may take to their own school districts to receive up to 9 CEUs for the Summer Institute. Sixteen participants are selected from an open, but rigorous application process. All accepted applicants receive free books and teaching materials; likewise, their tuition is paid by a grant from the National Writing Project.

After the summer is over, the participants may stay active with the project by participating in an advanced institute (Teacher Inquiry Project) in which they return to their classrooms and engage in their own teacher-inquiry projects. Under the mentorship of ECU college faculty, teachers investigate problems they’ve observed as seasoned teachers and consider possible solutions.
